Brains: Are You Ready For October?

by Alicia Sparks, Mental Health Notes on September 25th, 2007

Whew! What a stressful past few days it has been! If you’re waiting for my explanation for no Saturday Sanity, and no new Mental Health Notes posts on Sunday or Monday, either, here it comes:

My beloved computer has died.

Well, it’s death was definitely dramatic enough to warrant more than five-word sentence of explanation, but it’s a long, painful tale with the same ending: My beloved computer has died.

So, here I sit at our local library, working and wishing I’d beat the Breast Cancer Awareness Month people to the punch.

What punch, you ask?

October is also Health Literacy Month and I was toying with the idea of creating a display about the subject for our NAMI affiliation - including all the other mental health-related days are in October - to showcase at the library. However, the table’s been taken. That’s what I get for being a slowpoke!

In any event, I can still gather up information to distribute at our October NAMI group meeting - and a lot of information it will be!

If you also lead/participate in any kind of support group, or just like to promote awareness, below are all the mental health-related areas recognized in October:

  • Health Literacy Month: Recognized throughout the world during the entire month of October.
  • National Brain Injury Awareness Month: Recognized in America and Canada throughout the entire month of October.
  • Autism Awareness Month: Recognized in Canada throughout the entire month of October.
  • National Down Syndrome Awareness Month: Recognized in America throughout the entire month of October.
  • Mental Illness Awareness Week: October 7-13.
  • World Mental Health Day: October 10.
  • Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day: October 11 - Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day is held each year on the Thursday of Mental Illness Awareness Week.
  • National Depression Screening Day: Also on October 11.

Don’t worry, I’ll be providing you with reminders and information relevant to each of these awareness topics throughout the month.

Let me know if I’ve missed anything!
