Mental Health Awareness Days Abound!

by Alicia Sparks, Mental Health Notes on October 11th, 2007

Today was both Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day and National Depression Screening Day. Since the two are mood disorders, it’s not surprising they’d run together!

Unfortunately, I didn’t organize anything for my area in the name of NAMI. I missed October’s meeting due to being tortured in the grip of Cymbalta withdrawal symptoms, and I’ve kind of just sat tight for the past couple of weeks, riding this thing out and preparing for November’s meeting. I’m sad about that, but like my NAMI West Virginia “mentor” told me, I needed to worry about me.

*sigh*

Anyway, the day wasn’t a total loss as far as awareness goes - my good friend and former Genetics and Health b5media blogger Hsien-Hsien Lei gave me and bipolar disorder an awesome shout out today at her fabulous blog Eye on DNA: Genetics of Bipolar Disorder and Hypomania. (Is “shout out” the appropriate term to use when one refers to information about and the awareness of bipolar disorder? Haha.)

There are some seriously interesting-looking articles linked - Hsien lures us to click them by highlighting facts like “Identical twins have a 70 percent higher chance of developing bipolar disorder.”

I had no idea!

Did anyone do anything for either of these awareness days? Read up on one of the conditions? Accompany - or invite - a loved one to a support group meeting? Urge a family member or friend - or yourself - to get screened for depression?

And while we’re on it, is any of you out there one of a twin set and have a comment on the bipolar disorder and twins fact?

Let’s here it!
