Look At Mental Health During National Veterans Awareness Week 2007

by Alicia Sparks, Mental Health Notes on November 12th, 2007

Yesterday was Veteran’s Day here in America, and if I’m not mistaken today is the day we Americans are observing it “nationally,” i.e. not going to work or school, having parades, visiting our loved one’s graves or hugging our loved ones who are still with us - of course by “loved ones,” in this case, I’m referring to our veteran military service men and women.

November 11 also kicked off National Veterans Awareness Week 2007.

In light of recent events, there is one thing we should focus on this week aside from time off work, parades, showing gratitude to both our alive and our deceased veterans, and yes, even taking advantage of all the sales:

We should focus on the effort to make sure our veterans - and our active military service men and women - receive the mental health care they deserve.

A quick Google of “mental health care for military veterans” brings up 1,850,000 results. Go ahead - get up-to-speed with what’s going on regarding American soldiers and mental health care.

Once you’re good and pissed off, start taking action.

  • Write your representatives.
  • Search for and sign related petitions.
  • Start your own petition.

Some Soldier’s Mom said it best: “Our veterans should not have to fight for the high quality health care they’ve earned.”
