Don’t Feel Lonely And Isolated This Holiday Season

by Alicia Sparks, Mental Health Notes on December 23rd, 2007

Back in August, I invited you to Make The World FACE Mental Illness when the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) launched their National “Facing Us” Campaign. The, last week, I told you about the launch of FacingUs.org.

Today, I’m sharing with you parts of another email I received from Vanessa Figueroa on behalf of the DBSA, bold added by me:

Hello Alicia,

Hope all is well with you. I wanted to touch base with you this morning regarding the Facing Us website that could potentially assist the on-line community this holiday season.

As people look ahead toward the holiday season and the New Year, they are typically filled with thoughts of happiness and joy. For some though, the holidays are a time of loneliness, depression and anxiety about the past year and uncertainty of the year to come.

On December 3, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance celebrated the launch of our new online community FacingUs.org, which caters to the total wellness of those who suffer from depression and bipolar disorder, as well as the general population. The site is part of a larger campaign to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness and help everyone to understand that these are real, medical and treatable illnesses.

The Facing Us website was designed specifically to provide inspiration and support to those who suffer from depression and bipolar disorder. The site provides a comfortable environment where online users can participate in interactive features such as developing a personal wellness plan, keeping a private online journal and sharing tips with others for maintaining good mental and physical health. They can also connect to important outside information and resources about mood disorders. No other website can offer the tools and resources for total wellness that Facing Us can.

Also available in the Media Room of FacingUs.org are the winning entries from a nationwide contest that began in August. Inspiring personal video stories, beautiful artwork and powerful video public service announcements are a unique addition to this one of a kind website.

Please keep Facing Us in mind this holiday season.

I do believe Vanessa is onto something, and that a Web site like Facing Us would be especially beneficial to those who feel lonely and isolated this holiday season.

Go check it out!
