Can Cheerleaders Teach Happiness?

by Alicia Sparks, Mental Health Notes on January 16th, 2008

Are any of you familiar with Video Jug? I’ve visited this Web site several times over the past couple of years. The Web site’s slogan is “Life Explained. On Film,” and this morning I started wondering what kind of explanations any of the filmmakers may have for mental health-related areas of life.

I didn’t have to search for very long.

On the front page of the Web site, there is a navigation section entitled “New Year, New You…” and a category within it called “Get Happy!” Clickety-click, and you find five subcategories called “Happiness And How To Get It.” Five different people explain happiness from their viewpoints: a bartender, a cheerleader, a meditation teacher, a kid, and a celebrity.

A pretty well-rounded group of individuals who each seem to either deliver or possess a certain degree of happiness - stereotypically, anyway.

Check them out and let me know what you think. And, if “being happy” was a goal you wanted to accomplish with this year’s resolution mantra, how’s it working for you?
